eWEEK Newsbreak March 4th 2011

This week, Apple announced details of the new iPad2. The popular tablet has been completely redesigned to be dramatically faster, thinner and a little bit smarter. Among the new features is a dual-core processor, a built-in gyroscope and front- and rear-facing cameras. It will also boast iOS 4.3, which includes a speedier JavaScript engine, iTunes home sharing for wireless streaming from PC to iPad, improvement tweaks to Airplay, built-in Photobooth and Facetime; SAP has just announced a new on-demand application, called Sales-On Demand that could soon rival Salesforce.com and Microsoft CRM Online. Sales OnDemand is part of a series of on-demand applications SAP is positioning as extensions to its on-premises ERP (enterprise resource planning) systems; Salesforce.com also unveiled its Service Cloud 3 platform. The third iteration of Salesforces cloud-based customer service platform lets businesses analyze and respond to customer feedback filtering from social networks such as Twitter and Facebook; Cisco announced two unified communications platforms aimed at small and midsize businesses and a global sales productivity initiative called Cisco Partner Advisor, which will provide agents to give partners immediate and personalized sales support to accelerate sales.

In-app payment support arrives on Android

Right on cue, Google has launched in-app payment support for Android applications. Developer testing began last week, and now many popular apps -- like the ones pictured above -- can begin charging users for add-on functionality, content, or whatever the heck else they feel is worthy of additional bits of your pocket change. If you were wondering, Google will take the same 30% cut that Apple takes from in-app purchases.

At last we can buy individual issues in Comics with minimal fuss!

Samsung Series 5 Chromebook: Chrome OS Underwhelms

Maybe the Chromebook is just ahead of its time, or maybe the world will never be ready for a laptop that does little more than run a single Web browser. The compromises you make with Chrome OS far outweigh the benefits you get.

Google Voice Search learns Latin American Spanish, Indonesian, and Malaysian

google voice search
Google Voice Search has just introduced localizations for Latin America, Indonesia and Malaysia, enabling native language search for hundreds of millions of users.

Google's official blog post offers some interesting insights into the process of collecting and analyzing the speech data needed to expand support. Thousands of hours were spent gathering voice samples and choosing key regional accents to analyze, and International Program Manager Linne Ha is clearly very appreciative of the Google users who helped the company complete the expansion. Without an enthusiastic base of users to lend a hand, Google Voice Search's polyglot powers would have been nearly impossible to deliver.

webOS 3.0 beta now available to developers

hp touchpad webos 3.0
With the webOS 3.0 SDK available for almost two months, HP has now given developers access to a beta download of webOS 3.0 -- which powers the upcoming TouchPad and will likely ride along on HP desktops and laptops in the form of an emulator.

Right now, the webOS 3.0 beta is only available to Early Access developers. The crew at PreCentral states that HP appears to have eased up on access restrictions, however, so hopefully more devs will get on board and those of you who are planning to buy a TouchPad in the next couple months will have plenty of slick webOS 3.0 apps to install on your new tablet.

Apple Announces Launch Event, Rumored in Talks with HarperCollins

Apple will host a launch event for its "latest creation" in San Francisco on Jan. 27, in what many media and analysts expect will be the rollout for the long-rumored tablet PC. At the same time, several media outlets are reporting Apple in negotiations with HarperCollins Publishers, and possibly other publishing houses, to port content onto the hypothetical device. Although Apple has refused to officially confirm it is working on a tablet PC, months of rumors and analyst conjecture have driven chatter that the company is indeed developing something big. - Apple will debut its quot;latest creation quot; in San
Francisco on Jan. 27, according to an official invite
sent to media and analysts, who widely expect the device in question to be a
tablet PC.

In typical Apple fashion, the invitation itself is short on details and
big on style, featurin...
